If the Mellark bros were all together in 13 and ended up bonding as a family because everyone died and Peeta’s hijacked now:
*Rye sneaking up on Peeta from behind*
Rye: TIMBER!
Peeta, going off of torture instincts and either punching him, having a panic attack, throwing him on the ground, or all of the above: What is wrong with you?!?
Rye: Me?? You’re the one that freaked out!
Peeta: I’m the one who just escaped the Capitol, asshole!
Bannock: guys, come on.
Rye, pointing at his kid brother: What am I supposed to do with him if I can’t push him around?
Bannock, genuinely confused: I don’t know. Talk to him I guess.
Rye, giving it the good ol’ college try: so, uh, what were the games like?
Bannock: you can’t ask him that, he’s seventeen!
Rye: what the hell is that supposed to mean?! What do I do with him?!
Bannock: I don’t know! Ask him about food or girls or something.
Peeta, watching silently.
Rye: um, so how’s girls?
Peeta: the usual.
Rye: tight.
Bannock: you can’t say that to him! He’s like our kid now!
Rye: BUT THATS—I DIDNT EVEN MEAN IT LIKE THAT!
Bannock: HES JUST A KID!
Peeta: guys—
Rye: he’s seventeen! He’s like, baked to a golden brown.
Peeta, laughing now: What?

Headcannon about the Mellarks - part 1
There are three brothers, who share a small, cramped room at the top of the hot bakery. There is no way you can sleep there without opening the window, even in winter you would sweat to death.
The oldest has a bed just for him, near the window which provides fresh air at night. Definitely the best place.
The middle sleeps in the lower bunk bed, he can still catch the wind from the window, but not enough for a peaceful night's sleep.
The youngest sleeps on the top bunk bed, close to the ceiling. Where all the hot air gathers, it is suffocating. In the hot months he sleeps most of the time on the floor, in the middle of his brothers' bed, to try to get some fresh air.
There are definitely losers and winners in this dynamic. But like everything in the Mellark household, it was resolved through bargaining and fighting.
It's the strongest who wins.

I wish we knew more about Peeta’s relationship with his brothers. Did they have fun together and joke around? Or did they grow bitter and just look out for themselves in their mother’s wrathful household?
I feel like Peeta was close to his dad. It seems like they share the same kind spirit. My headcanon is that Mr. Mellark pointed out Mr. Everdeen and Katniss to Peeta as he walked him to school because he knows their home life is not the ideal family and he wants to give Peeta an example of a family that truly loves and scarifies things for each other, so that Peeta will know real love does exist even if it’s not what he sees at home.
Mrs Mellark was in Katniss own words a witch. She had no charity for anyone no matter how bad they were suffering. She was physically and emotionally abusive to Peeta and probably her other sons as well. Maybe she saw it as a way to toughen them up and give them an every man for himself outlook on life that might help them if they were ever reaped for the games. I feel like Peeta despite everything really loves her and he does forgive her after his first games.
I wish we knew if any of the Mellarks visited with Peeta in victors village.
Poor Peeta lost his whole family in the bombing but it doesn’t have much of an impact on the readers since we knew so little about them and their relationships with Peeta.

You mentioned you had thoughts on how Mr Mellark's play into Peeta feeling unwanted and unneeded, I was wondering if you wanted to share them ?
Because I just never know what to think of him (except that it is kinda funny to me that he is essentially "the Gale" in the parents's love triangle), he seems very kind like Peeta but also incredibly passive in his own family.
and also if you had any other headcanon surrounding the Mellark's family ?
TW: domestic violence, child abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse
Right this is going to get long 😂 So, my headcanon about the Mellark family/Mr. Mellark is sort of a mix between a family I have a personal connection to and a few families I've had to call child protection on. One physically and emotionally abusive mother, and one father who is caught up in domestic abuse himself, but would be labelled as failing to protect his children.
First, I'm going to clarify that I think Peeta believes he isn't loveable, which makes him feel unwanted and unneeded, but that is his core childhood wound. (see more about Enneagram Type 2, which is how I read Peeta's character).
There are a few components to Peeta getting treated the way he was. First is that while I do think the Mellark parents started their courtship and marriage believing they were in love, they both lacked the ability to effectively resolve conflict. She's aggressive and he just wants to make peace, which often leads to him placating her rather than standing up for himself. Their fights will often turn into Mrs. Mellark verbally and emotionally abusing her husband (he's bigger than her, so she doesn't physically abuse him, but the verbal and emotional abuse do damage). It doesn't help that they've both struggled to get by financially their whole lives and getting married doesn't solve that problem.
This brings in the boys. They're ecstatic about their first baby boy, but parenthood brings more challenges and there's more strain. Their first has a preference for Mr. Mellark, so when their second baby boy comes, Mrs. Mellark lays her claim on him and he's her golden child who can do no wrong. The stress of running the bakery, being parents to a toddler and baby, and their consistent fighting continues with Mr. Mellark getting the brunt, cruel end of his wife's words and emotional violence.
Despite her reputation, Mrs. Mellark doesn't enjoy this dynamic, she's stuck in patterns from her past. She gets especially unhappy when that hunter comes by to trade squirrels and Mr. Mellark asks after his wife, a girl he used to court. So when Mr. Mellark wants a little girl, Mrs. Mellark agrees to have one more to try for a girl. To try and save the marriage.
And then Peeta comes. Mr. Mellark has a big heart so he loves him anyway and Mrs. Mellark loves him as any parent does, but Peeta isn't the magic solution to her marriage that she wanted. And a couple months after Peeta's born, Mr. Everdeen comes by and boasts about his new little girl. His wife, the one her husband once wanted to marry, had a girl where she had failed. All of this gets redirected to Peeta and he becomes the scapegoat child. While Mrs. Mellark gave her older two corporeal punishment (spankings) she goes harder on Peeta than the other two, especially her golden middle boy. The older two take their mother's lead at times, though their feelings are a little more complicated. Sometimes Peeta's one of the brothers, but when Mother gets in one of her moods, they'll use Peeta as a shield.
Now Mr. Mellark tries to make up for all of this by being Peeta's buddy, giving him all the love his mother doesn't give him. That makes Mrs. Mellark more resentful, who wants her husband to love her like he did when they were courting and first married. And it also confuses Peeta more, because when Mrs. Mellark comes after him whether verbally and/or physically, his father never fights her. He might come in-between and try to calm her down, but if that doesn't work, she'll press on anyway and go after Peeta. His father doesn't even chastise her for what she's done to him. Time after time, Peeta gets the message even from his father that he's not worth protecting, which means he's not loveable. His personality, though, is convinced that if he learns to appease Mrs. Mellark and not anger her, and if he keeps doing helpful things for his father, and make jokes with his brothers, that they'll come to love him and treat him that way. The way he sees that miner's daughter love her little sister and the way he's watched her parents love each other. And he learns how to keep a lid on his mother as he gets older and bigger, but there are still days her anger has nowhere to go but with her hands on him or calling him names.
And still, all his father has is empty words his mother never listens to. Because if Peeta left the family, he wouldn't be missed, because he'd never truly been loved by them.
So yeah. That's how I headcanon Mr. Mellark and the whole Mellark family dynamic affecting Peeta and his subsequent relationship with Katniss.
Thanks for the ask and letting me explain all of this!

Learned some important things in this chapter --
One, I've had to move to digital linework. It just makes edits easier.
Two, I need to give myself more time if I want higher quality. I'm happy with the art of this chapter, but it falls under 'good and acceptable'. Balancing edits, life, and the fact that I work in Pharmacy during flu season means I had less time than I'd hoped, and I just accepted I wanted to get this chapter OUT. I didn't want to make people wait longer.
So bi-weekly updates moving forward, but Patreons will see weekly pages as I finish edits and pages.
This has already turned into a great learning process and excited to continue it! I also would LOVE to hear your thoughts on Peeta's brothers~ I know there is quite the debate about their names.

a silly headcanon i have for peeta is that he is just LOUD. not just his feet when he walks. he has a voice that you can pinpoint out in a crowded room. his laugh can be heard above everyone else’s. sometimes when he gets excited his voice gets even louder and he has to ask katniss “i’m yelling, aren’t i?” when he notices her eyes getting wider. he can command a space with his words but also his sheer volume.

there’s this popular TikTok account called “North Valley Group” about 3 brothers who work in their dad’s business and it’s giving me Mellark brothers vibes 😭 I can imagine them having a similar account for the bakery in a modern AU and barely actually posting bakery related content and more of them just goofing off and becoming viral sensations for being a funny menaces to society/ Mr. Mellark 😂
I don't have a TikTok so I'm not familiar with this account, but OMG just imagining them going to Mr. Mellark and convincing him that making a TikTok will help sales and at first it's all cake decorating and showing off the baked goods, then spirals into them goofing off, pranking each other (in a way that is not obnoxious), and also, let's be honest, posting some thirst traps. Do not tell me that a video of Peeta or one of his equally buff brothers kneading dough in a white t-shirt with flour all over their forearms is NOT going viral. And also Katniss follows them on her anonymous account, but not, like, because she has a crush on Peeta or anything. Definitely not. She just really likes bread.
Thank you for the fun modern AU thoughts, anon!! 🤗
